Henry Schein advances health equity for individuals with disabilities
Henry Schein has been named to Fortune® Magazine’s "Change the World" list for its outstanding work in advancing health equity for individuals with disabilities. At Henry Schein we are honoured to receive this accolade for the third time, proving our ongoing dedication to, and how seriously we take, our corporate social responsibility.
According to the Office for National Statistics’ 2021 Census, 10.4 million people in the UK have a disability, accounting for 17.8% of the population. Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are particularly vulnerable to poor oral health and have complex oral health care needs. This is due to various risk factors that people with IDD may face, including barriers to accessing quality health care.
In response to this pressing issue, Henry Schein has established a disability task force that includes several business units within the company. They have also announced plans to create an Employee Resource Group (ERG) in 2023 for Team Schein Members with disabilities, reflecting their commitment to promoting a diverse, inclusive workplace that aligns with their Team Schein Values.
FORTUNE® Magazine’s “Change the World” list recognises companies that embrace corporate social responsibility and recognise how it can add value to business and society. The companies are evaluated based on their measurable social impact, business results, degree of innovation, and corporate integration. Henry Schein's recognition is a testament to the significant strides we have made in advancing health equity for individuals with disabilities.
As dental professionals, it is crucial to recognise the role we can play in promoting health equity, particularly for individuals with disabilities. Together we can all work towards achieving our shared goal of improving oral health outcomes for all individuals.
As well as this, Henry Schein UK has taken a growing focus on what we can do for our communities. These are just some examples of what we are doing:
- Practice Green: Our sustainability initiative aimed to make the company more sustainable, and assist dental practices in doing the same.
- Practice Pink: In November we had a fundraising initiative across Henry Schein UK to help raise money for breast cancer.
- Paid volunteering days: All our Team Schein Members can take two paid days every year to volunteer with a charity of their choice.
- Donations: Team Schein Members donated warm winter clothing to support our local community through the winter.
“At Henry Schein, our work towards improving health equity and patient outcomes naturally encompasses our efforts for individuals with disabilities, given the large number of patients within this community and the substantial care gaps that persist,” said Stanley M. Bergman, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Henry Schein. “From our earliest days, we have held ourselves accountable to the five constituencies that make up our ‘Mosaic of Success’ – our customers, suppliers, Team Schein Members, shareholders, and society at large – and this model of stakeholder engagement has, in turn, helped advance our business growth.”
When named previously to FORTUNE Magazine’s ‘Change the World’ list, Henry Schein was recognised for expanding access to oral health care for underserved populations worldwide in 2018, and in 2020 for our role in co-founding and leading the private sector of the Pandemic Supply Chain Network.
